Paper Projects and Renderings

Particle
by   Selda Sahin and Derek Gregor

This costume design was actually for avatars in an up-and-coming musical about video gaming. The idea was to take the essence of each character and translate into their respective characters.

The Whirligig
by Hamish Linklater

This play is about a small group of family and friends that come together and revisit their past after their daughter/friend returns home on her death bed after a hardcore drug addiction. The costumes reflect the fact that is an ensemble piece and that no one person is to blame for Julie's downward spiral; who wears bright yellow in flashbacks versus a tarnished mustard yellow int he present.

Assassins
Music by Stephen Sondheim
Book by John Weidman

The concept behind this version of Assassins was the idea of the American Dream. Each assassin has their own version of what there Utopian society is like, so they are all extremely patriotic.

Flyin' West
By Pearl Cleage

In this play, the design intent circled around Minnie and her growth from an abusive marriage to the freedom she feels with her sisters at home. The color inspiration came from that of a bruise, and the journey it takes to heal.

Bonnets: How Ladies of Good Breeding are Induced to Murder
By Jen Silverman

In this campy play about history and murder, the women are all seen in a monochromatic color scheme with pops of red. This is because red is the color that unites everyone whether it is blood, lust, love, or anger.

The Rover
By Aphra Behn

My inspiration for Behn's restoration classic was birds. The idea that these people are so outrageous and flighty creates a farcical world that is infused with commedia dell'arte.

The Black Eyed
By Betty Shamieh

This is an interesting tale about four Pakistani women who are trapped in a "limbo" world. They reflect on the lives that they previously led and discuss what lies ahead.

Cinderella
Music by Richard Rodgers
Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

In this modern-esque version of Cinderella, I decided to take inspiration from Vegas and the influence of drag to create a few silhouettes for the ball.

Comedy of Errors
By William Shakespeare

I wanted to expose children to Shakespeare. With this said, I decided my concept would be set in a fictional world such as Candyland. I thought that the colors or flavors of the characters would shine through and be able to speak to young audiences. This was presented at the 2020 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (region 3).

The Boys from Syracuse
Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Book by George Abbott

For my version of The Boys from Syracuse, I decided to set it on ice. This would make the singing and dancing more entertaining but also aide the actors in the quick paced farcical comedy that this show contains. I love the idea of keeping the colors bright to show how zany and upbeat these characters truly are.

Metamorphoses
By Mary Zimmerman

This unrealized project was interesting because I took Zimmerman's classic and turned it into a rock concert. The conceptual renderings feature Zeus as a female shredding a guitar, the scientist, and the laundresses at the beginning.

Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death
By Benedict Braxton-Smith & Megan Peterson

This was a fun project to work on. As a MFA candidate, I got to talk with the director, and writers to develop a design for this new musical as it was being work-shopped at Michigan State University. I decided to dive into the children's book element of the story to narrate the fact that death is something that can speak to any audience of any age.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories
By Salman Rushdie
Adapted by David Tushingham & Tim Supple

This unrealized costume design was imagined for a traveling children's theatre troupe that would present literature to schools. I envisioned that scenery ad lights would be nonexistent in this circumstance so I made the costumes to appear very literal to inform and engage the young audiences. The actors would also be able to change quickly because the actors would be playing multiple parts; to accommodate for this most of them wear a base costume of a dark tee shirt and a pair of gray harem pants and sandals. This project was a finalist at the 2019 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (region 3).

Dangerous Liaisons
By Christopher Hampton

This unrealized costume design took elements from the original time in which the play is set, but with a future dystopian twist. As sex is used as a tool of power in this play, I wanted the characters to be immersed in the world of just that. So much of my inspiration came from modern BDSM with the style of Rococo.

Death of a Salesman
By Arthur Miller

This unrealized costume design took inspiration from art therapy and water color. All of the costumes would have a watercolor treatment to replicate watercolor painting which is commonly used in the treating of dementia. This design was presented at the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (region 3) for unrealized design projects.

Riders to the Sea
By John Millington Synge

For this unrealized costume design, I decided to draw inspiration from the setting in which the the play takes place--a rural cottage by the sea. My renderings for this project include the four title characters Cathleen, Maurya, Bartley, and Nora.
