Props and Scenery

Tracy Jones
By Stephen Kaplan

Scenic Design
2022
Williamston Theatre

Director: Tony Caselli
Lighting Design: Shannon Schweitzer
Costume Design: Karen Kangas-Preston

This was my first professional scenic design. The Jones Street Bar and Grill is a fictional place that hosts a party for a group a women all named Tracy Jones. Ironically only two people show up and then hijinks ensue.  My director wanted to cover the walls with anything and everything to combine the idea of commercialism, nostalgia, and fun to further the chaos of Tracy Jones.

This show is very intimate and I wanted to create a small thrust in a black box space. The cottage and the garden are equally both significant to the storytelling therefore I wanted split them equally in representation on the stage.

Setting this TYA musical in an intimate space such as a black box had its challenges, but I decided to utilize foundational columns and repurpose them to become interlocking trees. This would immerse the audience into the forest and the world of play.

I wanted to make the stage seem vast with a sandy floor treatment and have two set pieces that could rotate to reveal other locations/interiors.

Hubert and his girlfriend were created as a professional development project during Covid-19. The dog puppet was later commissioned as a gift for the previous chair of my theatre department. For more process photos click here.

The lemon tree painting was a master-recreation project titled "Lemon Garden And Tea With Cookies" originally painted by Vitaly Urzhumov. The selections (left) are examples of my painting work done at Michigan State University.

This design project was created for a design lab class. It was completely rendered using the Sims 4 to explore unconventional rendering techniques.

Medusa: a New Musical
Book, Music & Lyrics by Wes Braver & Rachel Dean

Unrealized Scenic Art

Michigan State University

This was a great experience working with the team of Medusa for MSU's 2020 Imagine Project. The idea is that the stage is alley way and the scenic art is mainly graffiti and under black lighting are hidden images and phrases.

I had the amazing opportunity to work on this production of this heartwarming tale. The entire cast and crew at Williamston Theatre were very welcoming as I began to help with this beloved classic!

Scenic Design

Director: Kelly Casey

This play was produced as part of the UIndy Theatre Department's Student Directed Productions 2019.The biggest challenge I had was creating movable flats that could also house a usable window for actors to enter and exit from.

Director: Emma Rund

This play was produced as part of the UIndy Theatre Department's Student Directed Productions 2019. I had the pleasure of designing this play with minimal furniture because the director wanted her actors to use as much of the thrust space as possible.

Director: Destiny Heugel

This play was produced as part of the UIndy Theatre Department's Student Directed Productions 2019. I loved working on this play, especially the hand painted tiles that needed to be water resistant because of a very bloody scene.

Props & Scenic Design
2018
University of Indianapolis

Director: Zech Saenz

Aside from designing the set and providing the props, I also had to construct a stump that contained water at the beginning and then turn to blood at the end. I accomplished this by covering two buckets taped together with multipurpose foam sealant. I liked the unnatural texture it had so i kept it and simply painted over it and added moss. The basin of water at the top also contained a small plastic bag that was invisible to the audience, when the time came the actors would simply open it and reveal the blood. This project won the award for Crafts, Engineering, and Management at the 2019 region 3 Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)[Revised]
By Adam Long, Daniel Singer, & Jess Winfield

Props Design
2018
University of Indianapolis

Director: Bill Kincaid

This design was awarded a certificate of merit from the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Region 3. The premise of the show is to celebrate laughter in this parody of all of Shakespeare’s works. So for my props design I decided to supply all of the required props, and emphasize the absurd ones. This show had many elements that called for the constructing of props. I used plaster, a foam wig head, drape weight, and a pie pan to create the “Human head pie”. An added element my director had me throw in was stick puppets. He did this to emphasize the section that focused on Shakespeare’s comedies. I created these foam heads with a wooden rod, a foam floral ball, plastic, and fabric for the outfits. The biggest challenge I faced was sewing the tiny seams in each of the puppets costumes.

Props Design

Director: Brad Wright

For this small, modern show the director’s concept was clear-politics. For my props I decided to incorporate all aspects of the commercial realism that politics contains. Basically I drew from the three main patriotic colors, red, white, and blue; I then collaborated closely with the costume and scenic designers to coordinate colors accordingly. Example, the red bowls against the blue and white bed comforter.

Unrealized Scenic Design

This unrealized scenic design was generated with Vectorworks. I created the world of the underworld, by setting it in a cavern. My concept behind this was that many ancient civilizations believed that ‘cenotes’ or water filled caverns were portals to the underworld. I decided to build the set around a pre-existing black box theatre at the University of Indianapolis.

Student Directed Productions

Scenic Art
2015
University of Indianapolis

Directors: Chelsea Anderson, Elise Delap, & Morgan Jackson

For this night of one-acts I had the liberty of creating unique pieces for each of the productions. I had to paint and texturize the balustrades for
The Actor’s Nightmare. I also had the pleasure of learning a stippling technique for a scale replica of the Strawberry Fields Mosaic in Central Park. I also created a painted ombre for the chairs; this created a faint ghostly effect which is exactly what the director wanted.
